April 26, 1971 - September 21, 2020
SERGIO PARRA Sergio, dance instructor, father, brother, uncle, friend and longtime member of the Garfield Community, passed away unexpectedly on September 21, 2020 at the age of 49. Sergio is survived by his son, Alex Parra, his father Jose Arturo, his six sisters: Amada (Raul Lopez), Gabriela, Cristina, Maria del Carmen (Brian Parra Cano), Lupe and Frances (Alex Olmedo); brother Juan (Fortunata Martinez), 10 nephews, and 9 nieces. He is predeceased by his mother Maria Cristina Parra, brothers Lalito and Lino as well as his paternal and maternal grandparents. Sergio was born in Tepexpan, Estado de Mexico. The oldest of seven: his immediate family migrated to the United States the summer of 1980. Though Sergio grew up in Phoenix since the age of 9, his love for his Mexican heritage was never lost. Sergio preserved his Spanish language, cultural traditions, music and dance. Sergio was a devoted father, a loving brother, Quinceañera waltz choreographer, DJ, soccer coach, and a trustworthy mentor. His selfless dedication to the youth in the community is worthy of admiration. Sergio was a Folklorico dancer since the age of 10; performing on various stages, maintaining his culture alive. The family-founded Ballet Folkorico was created in 1985 of which Sergio became the instructor as an adult. For over 20 years Sergio has maintained Ballet Folklorico Tenochtitlan alive in the Garfield Neighborhood. He did this holding practices at home and later through the generosity of Henry Valencia and City of Phoenix staff, at Verde Park on 9th Street and Polk. Sergio’s belief in maintaining our Mexican culture alive, and offering all interested youth an opportunity to learn and perform, at no cost to them, was implemented year after year with no funding of any kind. Sergio made this possible for all. Sergio was a gifted instructor who would cultivate talented dancers regardless of the age and experience. Sergio’s goal to offer the opportunity to dance to all was fully achieved; though it was not always and easy journey. His family, friends, Garfield Neighborhood, and Ballet Folklorico Community have suffered a great loss. Sergio will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Sergio had a heart of gold. His memorial service is scheduled for 5:00 pm on Friday, September 25th, 2020 at Tradiciones, 1650 E Roosevelt St, Phoenix, AZ 85006. Masks will be required of attendees wishing to pay their respects and social distancing will be in effect. Flowers, donations, and condolences may be offered at 1105 E Pierce St, Phoenix, AZ 85006.
